No, this is not a post about little green men!
I skipped my Bible reading yesterday and was really compelled to get back into the Word first thing this morning. As I have mentioned, having realized that my Old Testament knowledge is weak, I started with Genesis and am reading forward. This morning I was reading in 2 Kings. It turns out to have been so appropriate in light of a contact from the person whom I feel most afraid of and threatened by.
Elisha is talking to his servant, who was afraid of being outnumbered in battle, here in 2 Kings 6:16-17:
And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them. And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire about Elisha.
MAGNIFICENT! Can you imagine the wonder the young man must have felt as God opened his eyes and the man saw how God had protected them?
I know that we have all felt alone at times of trouble. I know that most of us have read or heard the Footsteps poem. I have felt comforted, during the troubles of this last year, thinking of God carrying me when I was too broken to walk myself. He, in His glory, has done this for me, and for you, and will again.
But this? Horses and chariots of fire to protect His children! Let yourself go, in your imagination, and think of the worst time in your life, when you felt alone or threatened, and imagine that your eyes were just closed to God’s splendor and glory and His magnificent protection! Just because you couldn’t see it doesn’t mean it wasn’t there! And the next time you feel abandoned, pull that imagery into your brain again and let it flow down into your heart! That person who has the capacity to hurt me, the one who might hurt you? What power can they have against the glory and power of our God?
